A Farm Where Love and Confidence Grow
2020 REALTOR® Good Neighbor Greg Masucci opened a farm program four years ago that employs intellectually and developmentally disabled teens and young adults as growers. Nationwide, 80 percent of people with intellectual disabilities are unemployed. Masucci has been able to add more workers during the pandemic because of the added needs of local food banks. The program builds self-esteem and job skills among growers, who sometimes move on to other career paths.
Enriching Lives Interrupted by Brain Trauma
Kim Strub leads a nonprofit that improves the lives of people with brain injuries and their families through therapy, support groups, and social and recreational activities. In a decade, she has raised $1 million, tripled both the annual budget and the number of people served, and helped set up a concussion protocol for children in the Marin County schools network.
Building Tiny Homes, Spreading Love
REALTOR® Linda Brown and her husband David opened Eden Village, a tiny-home community offering permanent housing and support services to the formerly homeless. All 31 homes are now occupied, and plans are underway for two more villages in Springfield, Mo.
Honoring Her Son, Bringing Joy to Others
REALTOR® Tamara House lost her eldest son, but she used his life goal to rally a community around children with special needs. Grant’s House, which serves school-age children and emerging adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, has raised $3.6 million in memory of her son to provide after-school and summer programs. House has used her skills as a home rehabber to renovate the 50,000-square foot building.
The Healing Power of Home Makeovers
REALTOR® Vickie Lobo founded a nonprofit to provide families recovering from major setbacks with furnishings and other comforts of home. In six years, her group has completed more than 90 home makeovers, furnished with donations so those in need can recover and reestablish their households.
Florida REALTORS® Undertake Massive Cleanup
"Clean Up Florida Waters" brought together thousands of Florida REALTORS® to clean up beaches, lakes and waterways in the largest cleanup project in the Sunshine State's history, making a tangible difference in Florida communities.
Lifesaving Support for Distraught Teens
REALTOR® Jeff Fields is determined to save teens from a rising scourge: suicide. By the time he was 21, he had already given eulogies for three friends who had taken their own lives. Seeking to turn the tragedy into hope for others, former teacher Fields poured time and energy into training, leading, and fundraising for Teen Lifeline, a peer-to-peer crisis hotline that saw 28,000 calls in 2019.
Happiness is a Bike of One’s Own
REALTORS® Eric and Janet Baucom provide kids in foster care with a sense of freedom, personal control, and fun. What started as the pair assembling and donating 10 bikes in their garage has turned into Project Bicycle Love, a 501(c)(3) working with foster parents, social workers, school counselors, and others. In total, they’ve donated more than 350 bikes and helmets to provide kids in foster care an important part of the childhood experience.
